Day 14: ANGKOR (B/L)

Day 14: ANGKOR (B/L)

After breakfast, tuk-tuk drivers will take you along Charles de Gaulle Avenue to Angkor Wat Temple, the most majestic and famous temples-mountain site. The whole huge building is an allegorical representation of Hindu mythology, episodes are illustrated in the bas-reliefs that surround the central body as a gigantic comic. But above all, Angkor Wat is unique for the impression of strength and the energy that emerges: whether it is because of the position, the environment or the decoration, Angkor Wat remains a place apart, inhabited by an inexplicable presence, which releases an attraction, an almost palpable magnetism. It takes a while, not only to visit, but also to get used to his presence. You then visit Preah Palilay, a very graceful building although ignored by most organized tours.

Afternoon visit of Angkor Thom, "The Great City", returning by the South Gate, preceded by the alley of Giants and Demons. Inside, the first building enered is the Bayon, temple-mountain to the glory of Jayavarman VII, great Buddhist king, builder of the new capital. Strategically placed in the center of the complex, it represents Mount Merou, a sacred mountain of Hindu mythology. The central body consists of a tower 45 meters high, decorated on all four sides with the effigy of the king. Around, other buildings with richly carved walls, with scenes of battle and daily life. Then Phimean Akas, the 10th century, interesting architectural evolution as the first square-based temple. Not far there is the Baphuon, majestic state temple of the capital, whose base is 120 m by 100, and currently being restored. From there, we go to the Terraces of Elephants and Leper King. It was here that the official episodes of court life were most likely to take place, with the reception of ambassadors, sacred performances and state ceremonies.

Free dinner and overnight in Angkor

Day 15: SIEM REAP

Day 15: SIEM REAP

We will explore Kravan and Banteay Srei which are a jewel of Angkor that surpasses the other temples at the artistic level and for the beauty of its pink stones and the quality of its bas-reliefs, considered by many specialists superior to those of Angkor Wat. Founded not by a king but a rich Brahman, in the second half of the 10th century, he also seduced by the reduced scale of constructions, which adds even more grace to the whole.

Lunch at the local restaurant near the site and then continue to the Phnom Kulen Mountains. It is a rocky plateau, 40 km long and 14 wide. For the Khmers this place is holy, because it is here that Jayavarman II, founder of the Angkorian monarchy, instituted the worship of the God-king. Then several other kings built temples on this hill. Several paths cross this site, including the ballad of Kbal Spean, the "river of 1,000 lingas". Discovered in 1968, the river is encased in a forest, and cut by a series of small waterfalls. Many rocks are covered with innumerable sculptures, representing Shiva lingas, Vishnu sleeping on naga, representations of animals, such as frogs, bulls or lizards. A strange site marked by the first religion of the country and its innumerable gods and goddesses. On your return, you will visit a Khmer village with their palm sugar production. Before arriving in Siem Reap, visit Banteay Samré, a small temple very attractive in the same style of Angkor Wat.
